Zpět The MU Writing Lab: What is it, and what is it good for?

Centrum jazykového vzdělávání MU (Komenského nám. 220/2, Brno )

Lecturers: Joe Lennon and Abigail Mokrá

Date: 14th November at 2 p.m., place  MU Language Centre, Komenského nám. 2, Brno

In the past year Abbie Mokrá and Joe Lennon have been working toward establishing a Writing Lab at MU. The majority of US and UK universities, and many European universities, have a Writing Center (or Centre), so it’s not a new concept – but since we don’t have an equivalent service at Masaryk, students and teachers here might be unfamiliar with what we do, what our goals are, and how the Writing Lab differs from an academic writing classroom. We will briefly share some of the theory and practice behind the Writing Lab, and then show you a model Writing Lab consultation. Then we’ll ask you to do a bit of role playing using the concepts we’ve shown, and we’ll discuss some of the questions and issues that come up when writing pedagogy is focused on developing the writer rather than just the text.

IMPORTANT: Please bring to the seminar a very short (say, one paragraph) sample of writing, either printed out, or easily readable on a tablet or laptop. Your sample writing can be in English or Czech. It will be more interesting and useful if it’s written by YOU, and if it’s something you’re currently writing/revising – but if you don’t have something like that at the moment, it’s okay to bring a sample written by someone else.
