Languages for Specific Purposes in the United Kingdom, and the case of medical language teaching in Manchester
This interactive presentation will be divided into two parts. Firstly, it will report of the recent LSPHE initiative (Languages for Specific Purposes in Higher Education), which has now become an annual conference bringing together colleagues from across the United Kingdom and Europe to discuss policy and practice in LSP. The presentation will report on key issues and priorities identified during the 2015 and 2016 events, as well as plans for the upcoming 2017 iteration. Further to this, the session will focus on the case of the University of Manchester, which offers the UK’s largest medical language provision. The speaker will look at the structure and delivery of language alongside the medical degree MBChB, with examples from various coordinating and pedagogical challenges. Questions and answers will take place throughout the session, offering participants an opportunity to compare and reflect on their own experiences of teaching on similar courses.
