Zpět Academic Writing for Master's Degree


Through class discussions and intensive writing, students will learn to interpret and practice aspects of English academic writing in the course. At the end of this course students should be able to produce different genres of academic texts at upper-intermediate/advanced level. They should be able to use sophisticated strategies to help them understand abstract academic texts and interpret logical relations between parts of a coherent academic text.

When: Tuesday 10:00-11:30 (every week of spring semester 2016)

Entry expectations: Upper-intermediate language skills in English, ability to actively participate in class discussions and basic experience in academic writing. (B2/C1)

  1. general characteristics and types of writing, talking about one’s own research, describing research to different audiences
  2. the paragraph: the topic sentence, the T-E-E structure, coherence; describing research to fellow students
  3. academic writing style, formal vs. informal register; transformations of short texts
  4. case detail report: reporting formally on experiences
  5. complex structure of academic writing, nominalization, the passives
  6. writing summaries for different purposes
  7. writing abstracts
  8. abstracts, introductions and conclusions
  9. plagiarism and referencing, quoting, paraphrasing and summarising
