The Erasmus Intensive Language Course (EILC) organized for incoming Erasmus students at Masaryk University in Brno aims to enable students to gain the ability to interact in a simple way. At the end of the course, students should be able to discuss everyday topics and ask questions regarding them.
The two-week course consists of six 45-minute lessons per day, which is 60 lessons in total, and 20 hours of culture activities. During weekdays, there are 4 lessons of general language in the morning and 2 conversation lessons in the afternoon. Lessons are taught in groups of 12 students. Saturday is designated for a trip and Sunday is a free day.
The course takes place in the city of Brno which is, with its almost half a million inhabitants, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. Being home to six universities with over 70,000 students, Brno is a lively students’ town. Nevertheless, cosy streets of Brno give you impression of its rich history – Spilberk Castle and St. Peter’s and St. James’ churches were built in the 13th century and till today create the specific character of the town. Between wars, though, Brno was famous as the leading town of Czechoslovak Modernism; a unique example of the architectural art, the Tugendhat Villa, has recently been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city has housed famous names such as Gregor Mendel, the scientist-founder of the field of genetics, the writer Milan Kundera, the composer Leos Janacek, the playwright Jiri Mahen and the architect Mies van der Rohe.
Brno can easily be reached from Prague, Bratislava and Vienna by train and coach (2-3 hours) and by plane (from London/Stansted and Luton, Milan/Bergamo, and from Eindhoven).
