Behind the Pages: Summer School of Literary Culture & Festival Production

  • 13 – 17 July 2026
  • Masaryk University Language Centre, Komenského nám. 2, Brno, Czech Republic

Who is it for?

  • Students of journalism, cultural studies, humanities or arts
  • Aspiring cultural journalists, critics, and reviewers
  • Future cultural managers and event organizers
  • Anyone who wants to take an active role in shaping cultural life

What makes this Summer School unique?

Unlike classical academic programs, this school is built inside a living cultural event. You won’t only study literature—you will experience it from the backstage, the audience, and the organizing team’s point of view.

Program Structure

1) Morning Block – Classes, Seminars, Master Classes

  • Interactive seminars with university teachers and professionals from the cultural sphere
  • Master classes by acclaimed authors performing at the festival
  • Tailored workshops focused on writing, reviewing, event preparation, cultural journalism, festival production and creative communication

You will work in small groups and receive personal feedback from experts.

2) Afternoon Block – Festival Live

Every afternoon you will take part in cultural events from the official MAČ (Month of Authors’ Readings in Brno) program:

  • Public readings and author talks
  • Panel discussions and debates
  • Creative writing workshops
  • Exclusive special events for participants
You will have a chance to observe—not as the “public,” but as an emerging professional—how literary events are designed, moderated, promoted, and experienced.

Behind the Scenes Access

Meet members of the festival’s organizational team: producers, editors, moderators, media coordinators and technicians. Learn:

  • how the festival program is created
  • how authors are invited
  • how media promotion works
  • what challenges cultural organizers face and how they solve them

This is a rare opportunity to gain real insight into cultural production.

Focus of the Classes

  • Developing communication and presentation skills for cultural contexts
  • Creative approaches to reporting and informing about literature and cultural events
Learn how to write reviews, prepare interviews, represent cultural projects publicly, and create content that makes culture visible and engaging.

What will you gain?

  • Hands-on skills for cultural journalism and festival production
  • A professional network of writers, organizers and cultural practitioners
  • Practical experience with real festival events and tasks
  • A certificate of participation (optional line)
  • Inspiration, contacts, and creative confidence

Why participate?

Because culture needs not only creators—but interpreters, storytellers, thinkers and organizers. If you want to be one of them, this school is a perfect place to start.
