Learner autonomy

Zájmová skupina (SIG) zaměstnanců Centra jazykového vzdělávání na MU

O skupině

Autonomy in learning is a crucial component if the learning process intends to be successful. The formal education, however, does not usually give much space and support to learner autonomy. It tends to be limited by large numbers of learners and/or by extensive amount of learning content that has to be covered within the curriculum. In foreign language learning, the focus on developing communication skills requires even more attention paid to the needs of individual students and their learner autonomy. Thus, our Special Interest Group is devoted to various forms of supporting learner autonomy in language learning.

Více o Petře

Petra has been a member of the LA team from the very beginning. She has taught mainly seminars focused on grammar and popular culture, e.g. sit-coms. She has also enjoyed giving individual counsellings to a number of students from all over MU. As she has become an autonomous learning enthusiast and based on her inspiration from the English Autonomously course, she has applied some of its principles and methods also in her standard EAP classes at the Faculties of Arts and Social Studies, mainly in her courses on presentation skills. For example, her students conduct an analysis of their language skills and design a plan for the upcoming semester focused on their individual needs, they keep a self-reflection journal where they describe the process starting with their language learning history, or have short individual meetings with her to discuss their goals. She has also benefited from exchanging experience with autonomous learning programmes at the Universities of Helsinki and Paderborn.
