Writing Gab #4: Making abstracts less abstract

  • 20 November 2020
    10:30 AM – 11:30 AM
  • Zoom

The Writing Gab returns! This time Abbie and Joe will tackle a tricky genre – the abstract. An abstract is more than just a dry summary of your paper or presentation. It’s also an argument, and an advertisement. You need to describe your work in a way that makes its purpose and its importance clear. At the same time, you need to show multiple audiences – researchers, publishers, and colleagues – that the work you’ve done has value, and deserves respect. And you need to do all that in only a few words!

We have seen some reeeeallly boring abstracts in our day – and some amazing ones. So we’ll show you why many abstracts fail to make an impact, and offer some tricks and language you can use to make sure your research gets the attention it deserves. There will be time for your questions and suggestions, too.
