Workshop The Implications of CEFR 2018 for English teaching at B2/B2+ level

The CEFR language proficiency descriptors offer an extremely helpful guide to teaching, provided its intentions are understood. Generally, towards the more elementary end of the proficiency levels (A1, A2), there is little risk of misunderstanding, with few implications for teaching and assessment of learning. At the more advanced end, C1, C2, though, there can be much misunderstanding. Since most teaching takes place towards the basic end of these levels, the challenges of teaching at the more advanced end are seldom encountered and are less widely known. However, it is arguable that the most difficult level to teach consistently with the CEFR descriptors is B2/B2+, where the methods of teaching at the A end of CEFR butt up against the methods of teaching at the C end. At B2/B2+ level, the descriptors begin to assume some of the attributes of C1 while retaining some of B1, but teaching methods seldom adapt to this change-over. Instead, B2/B2+ teaching can sometimes simply be no more than a tougher B1, thus inappropriately extending the teaching methods appropriate to the more elementary end of language proficiency into levels where different teaching methods are required if the CEFR descriptors are to remain the guidelines. This workshop explores the ambiguities and challenges of B2/B2+ and their implications for teaching English, especially in higher education.

Orientovat se v současném ekonomickém dění by mělo být součástí profilu studenta ekonomické fakulty. Jak „být v obraze“ a umět to vyjádřit anglicky je cílem aktivity Business news, během níž studenti prezentují krátké zprávy. V rámci workshopu budou představeny různé způsoby prezentace zpráv a aktivit s nimi spojených. Důraz je kladen na to, aby byl aktivní jak prezentující, tak posluchači.

Orientation in current business events should be part of the profile of students of the Faculty of Economics. “To be in the picture” and be able to express it in English is the goal of the Business News activity, during which students present short news. Various ways of presenting news and activities related to them will be presented.

Po několika letech aplikace portfoliového hodnocení bychom v tomto workshopu rádi sdíleli naše zkušenosti, a to ve výuce čtyř jazyků (angličtiny, němčiny, ruštiny a francouzštiny). Podíváme se na naše sylaby i menší aktivity a cvičení, kterou jsou součástí tohoto typu hodnocení, a nenecháme si pro sebe ani to, co si o něm myslí naši studenti ve svých zpětných vazbách.

After several years of using portfolio assessment as the only method of assessment, teachers of four languages (English, German, French and Russian) would like to share how they practically apply portfolio in their classes. They will offer a look at their syllabi as well as minor activities and exercises and show what students have to say about it in their feedback questionnaires.

The MU Writing Lab: What is it, and what is it good for?

In the past year we have been working toward establishing a Writing Lab at MU. The majority of US and UK universities have a Writing Center, but we don’t yet have an equivalent service at Masaryk - and we really need it! We will briefly share some of the theory and practice behind the Writing Lab, and then show you a model Writing Lab consultation. We'll discuss some of the questions and issues that come up when writing pedagogy is focused on developing the writer rather than just the text.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: Please bring to the seminar a very short (say, one paragraph) sample of writing, either printed out, or easily readable on a tablet or laptop. Your sample writing can be in English or Czech. It will be more interesting and useful if it’s written by YOU, and if it’s something you’re currently writing/revising – but if you don’t have something like that at the moment, it’s okay to bring a sample written by someone else.)

Tento workshop navazuje na podobný, který proběhl minulý rok. Tehdy jsme mluvili o zavedení nového konceptu ve výuce angličtiny na FI a chlubili se pracemi studentů. Blended learning, portfolio assessed, distance course for masters students

English for Social Education II for masters students by distance with four classroom sessions ran very successfully this semester using a semester-long case study with mostly portfolio assessment. What will be presented is the overall review of the entire semester including rubrics, student and teacher reflection, course evaluation and the running of a portfolio defence.

Kurz Angličtina pro sociální pedagogy II pro studenty v magisterském kombinovaném studiu letos úspěšně proběhl za použití metody jedné případové studie rozpracované v rámci čtyřech sezeních a využití převážně portfoliového hodnocení. Workshop nabídne přehled celého semestru včetně rubrik, reflexe studentů a učitelů, hodnocení kurzu a průběhu obhajoby portfolia.

The workshop aims to help participants uncover persuasive means in convincing speeches and construct their own rhetorically persuasive speech, regardless the argumentative content.

Chtěli byste se vy nebo vaši studenti stát schopnými rétoriky? Nechme se inspirovat zdatnými řečníky z minulosti, na jejichž projevech si ilustrujeme klíčové rétorické prostředky, které zvyšují přesvědčivost a zapamatovatelnost.
